FAITH: Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?

“The hope that we have is that the Bible tells is in Matthew 25:41 that one day, all evil will be done away with. Until that day we can rely on God’s grace. He doesn’t always prevent tragedy, but his grace will always see us through it. “   When we turn on the TV, look on the internet, it seems that there is always something bad happening.  Police brutality, or mass shootings, rape, theft, abuse, and all sorts of other terrible things seem to happen more and more.  The confusing part for many is why does it happen to good people. First, we need to understand that we live in an evil world, and we really need to stop pretending otherwise. One question we always hear after a tragedy seems to be, “If God is in control, why does he allow bad things to happen?”  I can’t tell you why for each specific person.  But I know this.  That evil has existed on this earth since the very beginning. Well, let me make it clear.  When God created man, they were in the state of mind called innocence.  Man was good and but evil (devil) was present and since the devil tricked Adam and Eve into disobeying God, there has been evil in the hearts of mankind. Paul writes a letter to the Church in a city called Thessalonica.  2 Thessalonians 2:7 says, “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.”   What are we saying? Even Paul calls it a mystery. The Bible tells us that evil does not come from God. It only comes from the devil.  Here is the thing there is a scripture that says a man that is born from a woman has a short life and it is full of trouble. That means in life there will always be trouble.  There will always be things that will happen that are beyond your control.  But how you respond is what is important.   But each person is responsible for their choices.  God did not make us robots.  But He gave us the ability to make our own choice to select what is evil, or what is good.   He allows us to choose to serve Him or not serve Him.  But what He stresses in the Bible is that to every choice there is a consequence.  It does not matter if it is evil, or good.

So, why does God let these bad things happen?

What God is doing is giving every man the opportunity to get things right or do the right thing.  He is giving each of us the chance to choose Him. He wants us to have faith in Him and that you be the change.  However, there are those who choose evil instead of good and there is nothing that you can do about that.  We are each responsible for our own actions.  Good may not always be popular, but if we do it long enough it will reach someone.

What we need to understand that there is a life after this one. " As believers, it’s up to us to call on God before tragedy strikes. That is where people miss the boat when it comes to this question. The only time they invoke the name of God, is to question his existence. At that point it’s hard to convince them that God is almighty and sovereign. Either because it’s hard for someone in the midst of tragedy to hear, or because they just don’t want to. It’s different for those of us who already believe. It is up to us to have a daily walk with him. We should have a personal relationship with him that gives us the hope that we need to make it through hard times. We need to talk to him in prayer, and listen when he talks to us. He does still do that, and no it doesn’t mean you are crazy if you hear his voice.

The hope that we have is that the Bible tells is in Matthew 25:41 that one day, all evil will be done away with. Until that day we can rely on God’s grace. He doesn’t always prevent tragedy, but his grace will always see us through it." (
